Artist-in-Residence at Salina Art Center

Krista Franklin begins her residency June 3

Salina, Kan. (May 30, 2019) Krista Franklin is the artist-in-residence at Salina Art Center June 3 - 23. Franklin is a Chicago based poet, visual artist, storyteller, and teacher who works in poetics, pop culture, & histories of the African Diaspora. Her work is currently included in exhibition at the Art Center through July 28. Speculative Retrievals includes art from 2016 artist-in-residence Julia Goodman, Sahar Khoury, and Franklin. Gallery admission is always free.

The Art Center strives to enrich, inspire, educate, engage, and foster creativity. It’s all done by creating exchanges among artist, art, and audiences that reveal life. Franklin’s residency is funded by the Greater Salina Community Foundation, YW Legacy Fund.

Special programming includes:

  • Tuesdays, June 4, 11 & 18 visit Franklin at the Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. 4th St. from 2-4 during open studio. Visitors are free to come and go as they are able and get to know Franklin and her work.

  • Friday, June 7; 5-7pm Opening reception for Speculative Retrievals at Salina Art Center, 242 S. Santa Fe. Franklin will give a brief gallery talk at 6pm.

  • Saturday, June 8; 1-5pm Inclusion(s): Papermaking with writer and artist Krista Franklin. Inclusion(s) is an intro level community-based papermaking workshop with visiting artist-in-residence, Krista Franklin. Participants are invited to bring copies of photographs or flat ephemera to include in their handmade paper. The workshop is FREE, but registration is required.

  • Wednesday June 19, 12-1pm Lunch & Learn with Krista Franklin. Hear more about her experiences as an artist, poet and teacher. Art Center Warehouse, 149 S. 4th St.

  • Speculative Retrievals exhibition is open through July 28. Salina Art Center galleries (242 S. Santa Fe) are open Wednesday-Sunday 11-5pm. Admission is always FREE.
