The late Bruno Ganz, popularly known for playing Hitler in Downfall—and the countless memes it generated—plays a rather gentler personality living in Austria during WWII: Sigmund Freud. The film’s hero is young Franz (Simon Morze), who’s got some hang-ups stemming from his mother’s sex life (one of her lovers is actually struck by lightning). Franz gets work in a tobacconist shop patronized by cigar connoisseur Dr. Freud, who helps him with his problems. It sounds comedic but The Tobacconist is really an ambitious drama with sobering themes about how sexual repression and fear affect not just individuals… but entire nations.
